【JLPT N1 Grammar】〜がてら(~gatera)

Explanation:〜がてら

Meaning
"〜のついでに / 〜する機会きかい利用りようして"
「何かを行う機会を利用して、他のこともする」と言う時に使う表現。

Used to indicate doing two actions at the same time, where the second action is done incidentally or as an additional activity to the primary one. It conveys the meaning of "while doing," "on the way to," or "at the same time as" in English. The first action is the main purpose, and the second action is something done casually or without much additional effort.

Form
V(masu form)+ がてら
N + がてら

Points

  1. Dual Purpose: "〜がてら" implies that one action is done as the main activity, and another is done incidentally or while on the way.
  2. Casual and Incidental: The secondary action is typically not the main goal but happens naturally or without much effort as a byproduct of the first action.
