1. Adjective - けいようし

There are two types of adjectives in Japanese. One type is called “i - adjective” and the other type is “na - adjective”. “ i - adjective” has the final letter “ i - い ”.

 

(1) Example of “i – adjective”.
  hot:atsui - あつい / tall:takai - たかい / big:okii – おおきい

 

(2) Example of “na – adjective”.
  kind:shinsetsu - しんせつ / convenient:benri – べんり

 

  “famous:yūmei – ゆうめい” and “beautiful:kirei - きれい” has the final letter “i-い” but these are na – adjectives.



2. Nは Naです。 (N:Noun  Na: Na-adjective)
  Nは Aです。   (A:i – adjective)

①”です - desu” at the end of an adjective sentence shows the speaker’s polite attitude towards the listener.

(1) Mr. Kimura is kind.

 → Kimura-san wa shinsetsu desu.  きむらさんは しんせつです。

 

(2) Mt. Fuji is high.

 → Fuji-san wa takai desu.  ふじさんは たかいです。

 

② “na - adjective” じゃありません。

The negative form of “na - adjective” is [ “na - adjective” じゃありません。 

 

(1) It’s not quiet here.

  → Koko wa shizuka ja arimaesn. ここは しずかじゃ ありません。

 

(2) He is not kind.

  → Kare wa shinsetsu ja arimaesn. かれは しんせつじゃ ありません。

 

③ The negative form of “ i - adjective ”

To make the negative form of an “  i - adjective”,  “い - i  ” at the end of the “i - adjective” is altered to “くない - kunai”

 

interesting ::omoshiroi - おもしろい      →   not interesting:omoshirokunai – おもしろくない

black:kuroi - くろい                                  →   not black:kurokunai – くろくない

(1) This book is not interesting.

  → Kono hon wa omoshirokunai desu.  このほんは おもしろくないです。

 

(2) This is not spicy.

  → Kore wa karakunai desu. これは からくないです。

 

④ Questions using adjective sentences are made in the same way as those using noun or verb sentences. In answering a question, you repeat the adjective used in the question.

(1) Is it cold in Korea? → Kankoku wa samui desu ka. かんこくは さむいですか。

  … Yes, it is.  → Hai, samui desu.       はい、さむいです。

  … No, it isn’t. → Iie, samukunai desu.   いいえ、さむくないです。

 

(2) Is this water clean?  → Kono mizu wa kirei desu ka. この みずは きれいですか。

  … Yes, it is.  → Hai, kirei desu.       はい、きれいです。

  … No, it isn’t. → Iie, kirei ja arimasen.   いいえ、きれいじゃありません。


3. Adjective + Noun

An adjective is put before a noun to modify it. A na – adjective needs “な - na” before a noun.

 

(1) Mt. Fuji is a high mountain.

  → Fuji-san wa takai yama desu.  ふじさんは たかい やまです。

 

(2) He is a kind person.

  → Kare wa shinsetsu na hitodesu . かれは しんせつな ひとです。
