とても / あまり〜ない

“とても - totemo”  and  “あまり - amari”  are adverbs if degree. “とても - totemo” is used in affirmative sentences, and means “very”.  “amari” is used in negative sentences, and a negative form mean “not very”.

Sample sentences

(1) Japanese winter is very cold.　

　→ Nihonno fuyu wa totemo samui desu. 　にほんの　ふゆは　とても　さむい。

(2) This movie is very famous.

　→ Kono eega wa totemo yuumeidesu. 　この　えいがは　とても　ゆうめいです。

(3) ABC university is not very famous.

　→ ABC daigaku wa amari yūmei jaarimasen. 　ABC大学だいがくは　あまり　ゆうめいじゃ　ありません。

(4) Osaka is not very cold.

　→ Osaka wa amari samukunaidesu. 　大阪おおさかは　あまり　さむくないです。
